The project consisted of the removal and replacement of existing tollbooths and the installation of 13 new tollbooths. An elaborate substation and mechanical room were constructed underground in an existing basement. Construction entailed the removal and replacement of the existing roadway slab and repair of walls. The bracing system for the walls, which extended 14-foot below grade, was designed in-house by RCC. Plaza rehabilitation entailed the construction of two cantilevered signs and one overhead sign spanning the west bound lanes. RCC removed and replaced approximately 74,000 sf of pavement.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy Railroad Construction designed and built formwork and placed a 16’ long by 18’ diameter concrete plug. The plug was put in place to prevent any potential flooding problems from the broken water mains and the fire hoses at ground zero at the World Trade Center. Railroad Construction later removed the plug.
