The Purple Line Light Rail Project is a 16-mile, 21-station light rail transit line that will extend from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Prince George's County, Maryland.
Delta Railroad Services - Railroad Construction Company A Joint Venture, LLC (DRS-RCC) was awarded a contract by Maryland Transit Solutions (MTS) a joint venture of Dragados USA, Inc. and OHLA Group, Inc. (OHLA) to procure, install and test the direct fixation, embedded, ballasted and special track work.
DRS-RCC began construction on the Purple Line Light Rail project in October with the flash-butt welding of continuous-welded-rail (CWR) strings for installation along Campus Drive at the University of Maryland. The first rails will be installed into a 1,000-ft. stretch of concrete-embedded track, which will eventually be opened for shared use with vehicular traffic.
Once complete, the system will provide direct access to the existing Washington DC Metrorail System, MARC commuter rail lines and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.
The Purple Line is estimated to take 17,000 cars off the road daily.
