NJT Exits 6 to 9

Project Highlights / Scope of Work

  • Fabricated 107 sign structures (both static and variable message)
  • Structure types included overhead spans, butterfly and cantilever

  • Three year long project with rigorous delivery schedule

Project Description

This project upgraded the signs on the New Jersey Turnpike between Exits 6 and 9 under the Authority’s “advanced fabrication contract” program.  This type of contract, in which signs are purchased and stored by the Owner for installation at a later date, has become familiar in the industry.

Over the course of three years, more than 100 signs of varying types were produced.  These structures, both static and variable message models, included overhead span, butterfly and cantilever design.  Overhead spans include ladder entry and an enclosed walkway for programming and maintenance access.  All units were constructed of pre-weathered pipe and / or round tube steel.  In total, the project contained 1.5 million pounds of steel.

These new signs will improve safety on the Turnpike through better visibility, enhanced readability and advanced warning of roadway hazards.
